Mojang studio head Markus Persson announced via Twitter that Minecraft.net and Mojang.com will be taken down on January 18 in protest of the highly controversial Stop Online Piracy Act/Protect IP Act being debated by the US Congress.  Persson has not stated how long the blackout will last;  however, gamers can still play the game during the blackout if they have previously downloaded it.

This announcement comes shortly after Red 5 Studios CEO Mark Kern stated that the ongoing beta of its free-to-play shooter Firefall, as well as its website, will be shut down for 24 hours on January 18, also in protest of SOPA.  Social news website Reddit has also announced a blackout on that date.

For anyone wondering, Epic Games, Riot Games, and Runic Games have also publicly opposed the proposed bill.  Notable on the list of supporters for gamers are the National Football League and CBS, who owns Gamespot.
